English and Literacy

Working in partnership with Footprints into Africa, Core Plan
International launched two pilot English and literacy programmes in
Maputo and Matola, Mozambique for 23 amputees in February 2009
under their joint "Sustainability through Skills" initiative in an effort to
promote social change and development in marginalised and socially
disadvantaged communities.

Together with the community leaders and stakeholders we ran several
focus groups. The literacy programmes emerged as the skill of choice
in addressing the community’s challenge and their members desire to
aid livelihood development.

All lessons address the participant’s basic and practical needs and
mirror their social context. Every lesson incorporates information on
food security, health and hygiene. HIV/AIDS, healthy lifestyles and
nutrition.

Two months into the programme the participant have grown from 23
to over 70. The teachers use a wide variety of teaching methods
ranging from role-playing, acting and group discussions on topics that
are revelant within that particular community. All examples are
connected to the collective and have practical applications.

The same philosophy applies when we teach numeracy examples are
given around income generation as the groundwork in learning to
recognise numbers and calculations. By applying these methods the
participants are acquiring functional literacy skills and knowledge
around issues that have relevance to them as opposed to abstract
skills.

Sustainability through Skills will run over a ten-month period and be
independently evaluated to judge its impact and achievements with
individual literacy achievements, livelihoods development and change
within the community as key indicators of the programmes success
and relevance.

Rehabilitative Programmes

For the past five years, CorePlan International has been working closely with the LA County Sheriff's Department to build effective partnerships with governmental and community organizations to provide rehabilitative programmes and services to incarcerated offenders, and to leverage those services to ensure that individuals successfully re-integrate into their communities upon release from custody.

This effort included building and managing an all-volunteer workforce of 1,600 service providers who represented forty different rehabilitative programs that served a daily jail population of 20,000 in Los Angeles.  Over 150,000 people cycle through the Los Angeles County jails every year.  These efforts have been recognized several times by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors as being model programmes.   CorePlan International's success has also noted by leaders in London's New Scotland Yard, and CorePlan International is in discussions to design and implement similar community rehabilitative programs in the United Kingdom.

CorePlan International is working closely with the Bangladesh Unity Federation of Los Angeles (BUFLA) Executive Secretary.  Together, we are building a partnership through which CorePlan International can assist Bangladesh expatriates build their community through mutual respect and goodwill and provide assistance with immigration, employment, housing, governmental liaison, poverty alleviation, domestic violence, business development, and community identity first in Los Angeles, then in Bangladeshi communities throughout the world.
